What is an Explorer
Fire Service Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, but have not yet reached their 21st birthday.
Fire Service Explorer posts help youth gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of fire service, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.
In Castle Rock explorers meet most Tuesdays and occasional Saturdays to practice the art of firefighting. Most days start with an hour of physical training and then progress into classroom or hands on training. We learn about firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, ice rescue, water rescue, rope rescue, and much more.
We also have a ride-a-long program that allows explorers to work with on-duty crews to help establish whether the fire service is right for them. Explorers work, train, eat and respond to calls as a member of the Castle Rock team. Explorers will see the many sides of the fire service, we don’t just fight fires, be prepared to work hard and see a variety of things.
Safety is our paramount concern; we cannot help others if we become injured ourselves. Explorers are always supervised by experienced firefighters and are not allowed to enter burning structures or participate in highly dangerous activities. Firefighting is inherently dangerous and we are committed to operating in a safe effective manner.
Castle Rock explorers are active community members and participate in many functions for our town and the fire department. Explorers have helped with MDA collections, paint-a-thon, chili supper, Fallen Firefighters Memorial and much more. We also have fundraisers such as the "Tower of Terror" haunted house in October; we always strive to better our community.
For those explorers who choose a career in the fire service our program gives them a head start. For those who choose something else, they receive excellent teamwork, communication and leadership skills to help them succeed for the rest of their lives.
