What is an Explorer

Fire Service Exploring is a hands-on, worksite-based program for youth ages 14–18 who are interested in exploring a career in the fire service. The Castle Rock Explorer Post meets most Tuesdays and occasional Saturdays, blending physical training with classroom and real-world instruction in firefighting, EMS, and rescue operations.

Participants receive training in:

  • Firefighting skills

  • Emergency medical services (EMS)

  • Hazardous materials, water, ice, and rope rescues

  • Leadership, communication, and teamwork

Explorers also participate in ride-alongs with on-duty crews, working, training, and responding to calls as part of the Castle Rock Fire team.

🛑 Important Note
While this program offers unique and valuable experience, it also involves exposure to the emotional realities of emergency services. Explorers may witness traumatic events, including medical emergencies, accidents, and emotional distress. Firefighters are not counselors, and while safety and support are prioritized, this program is not designed to offer emotional or psychological care.

Serious consideration should be taken before applying. Participants must be emotionally mature and ready to handle the intensity of real emergency work.

Additionally, for safety reasons, Explorers are never allowed to enter burning structures or engage in highly dangerous activities and are always supervised by trained firefighters.

Beyond emergency response, Explorers support community events like the MDA fundraiser, chili supper, and Fallen Firefighters Memorial, building strong ties with the department and the town.

Whether a future in fire service is your goal or not, the Castle Rock Fire Explorer Program equips youth with life skills in leadership, communication, and resilience.
